We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic assistant professor who can lead a research team in cancer biomarkers for a 2-year position to commence on 1st November 2023.

Our research
Research at the Centre for Medical Parasitology (CMP) is focused on malaria and recently on using the learnings from malaria during pregnancy to develop novel cancer diagnostic tools and therapies. All activities are organised in thematically defined teams, each led by a senior scientist. The team leaders, the Head of CMP, and a technician representative form the daily leadership of CMP. CMP is part of a well-established international scientific network, composed of scientists in Europe, Africa, America, and Australia. More than 60 scientists and technicians are affiliated at CMP. The VAR2CSA team spans over development of vaccines against malaria and other infectious diseases including COVID19 as well as research and development of novel cancer therapies and diagnostic tools. Our research facilities are located at the Panum Institute in the Mærsk Tower.

Your job

In considering applications for the assistant professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of applied cancer diagnostics and biomarker research. The position will focus on how to utilize onco-fetal Chondroitin sulphate as a biomarker for cancer with a specific focus on clinical testing in close collaboration with University hospitals. A key part of the work will be to coordinate research between international teams funded through Eurostars and Innovation Foundation research programs.

The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
  • leading research team including laboratory technicians and master students
  • managing larger international research collaborations
  • research-based teaching
  • sharing knowledge with society

Furthermore, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in molecular biology, biology, human biology or similar.
  • You are highly experienced in molecular cancer biology and cancer immunology
  • Proven experience in single cell analyses, including mRNA seq, microscopy and flow cytometry
  • You have an active interest in translational research
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken
Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience in grant application writing and research coordination
  • Experience in management of clinical data and collaboration with Hospitals
  • Knowledge in cancer biomarkers for diagnostic use
Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.



Terms of employment

The average weekly working hours are 18.5 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of two years. The start date is 1st November 2023 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.



The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

The further process
